REHABILITATION OF FAILING SEPTIC SYSTEMS

In areas of poor soils, or undersized systems, this effort is frequently combined
with the installation of an aerobic treatment unit. The benefits of aerobic
treatment are multi-fold. First, those organisms which clog the soil are those
which grow in an anaerobic (i.e., septic) environment. However, studies show
that those organisms associated aerobic effluent actually enhance the passage
of effluent through the soil. Other studies show that aerobic effluent can be
loaded into the soil at rates of three to seven times the loading rates of
anaerobic effluent. This means that a much smaller leachfield system can be
used with an aerobic treatment system than that required of a standard septic
system. This is particularly critical for poor soils and small parcels. The cost for
the installation of an aerobic system is less than $10,000.
Typically, the EEA effort is to first aerate the leachfield after using the
SEPTECH method. If this fails to mitigate the problem, then the aerobic
treatment unit is installed. If the system continues to remain in failure, then the
aerobic treatment system can be incorporated into the design of a new septic
system.

by Dr. James Converse. In this historic effort, Professor Converse,
known as the Godfather of engineered septic systems, studies the rehabilitation
of failing septic systems using a Multi-Flo aerobic treatment unit. It might be
noted that Dr. Converse required that all systems have an operational history of
five years without a problem. His mitigative effort including pumping the
anaerobic effluent out of each leachline combined with the installation of an
aerobic treatment unit. More than 80% of the systems he studied were
rehabilitated with his method.

In SEPTECH revitalizes exhausted leach fields, the SEPTECH process
is briefly outlined.
